Welcome writers! Under the “Self-Publishing Resources” tab on your left you will find a collection of resources that you may find useful if you’ve decided to take the plunge and publish your own book. Much of this information has been collected from writer’s workshops with speakers that were organized by 3 Penny Publishing.
Self-Publishing means* that you do all the tasks that a publisher would normally do for you. Editing, formatting, cover design, finding a printer or turning your book into an ebook, marketing, promotions, and hopefully, sales. Some writers have the skills to do many of these tasks themselves, some hire professionals to handle specific tasks, while others who have more to spend and less time purchase a bundle of services from one self-publishing company.
The following categories are also under the Self-Publishing tab on the left:
Events, writer’s festivals, courses (and Past Events)
Zines, Digital Magazines & Chapbooks
Bookstores in Victoria BC & Beyond
*What is self-publishing: “Self-publishing means that you are responsible for writing the text, getting it edited and proofread, hiring a printer (not a publisher) to make copies of the book, figuring out how to sell the book, creating advertising and promotional materials, physically getting the book into the hands of buyers, collecting the money, etc. Aside from the actual writing, the author either learns how to do the other elements himself, or (preferably) subcontracts each one with professionals.” Barbara Doyen
